TRADITIONAL & FIGURATIVE

Traditional, Figurative and decorative stained glass design projects by Lance Feeney:

Stained glass designer and glass painter Lance Feeney, studied stained glass design, glass painting and the history of glass at Swansea School of Art at West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education, Wales, United Kingdom: 1977 - 1980. Tutors included: Marjorie Walters (Ex-principal designer for Whitefriars Studio, London) - heraldry, decoration and classical cartooning; Colwyn Morris - figurative drawing, drapery design and classical composition; John Edwards - glass painting and staining; Tim Lewis - modern design and stained glass history.

English, French and German stained glass design (12thC - 16thC) and (19thC - 20 th C) was studied in detail.

Designing new stained glass for Australian churches

Much of the stained glass in Australia is less than 150 years old. It varies widely and was designed, manufactured and exported to Australia by UK studios including: Hardman and Co, William Wailes, Clayton & Bell, Whitefriars, William Morris and Co, as well as the Irish stained glass studio of Harry Clarke. During the late 19 th and 20 th C, local and immigrant artists also produced stained glass including: John Ashwin and Company, John Radecki, Napier Waller, Stephen Moore, David Saunders, Paddy Robinson, Klaus Zimmer, Jeff Hamilton, Cedar Prest and Lance Feeney.

Designing new stained glass can require the ability to work across a range of styles and compliment existing windows. Lance Feeney designs new stained glass work to harmonise with existing figurative compositions, iconography and symbolism, while providing design innovation and a contemporary context. All traditional and figurative stained glass windows are manufactured using mouth-blown glass imported from Europe, the UK or the US. Detail is hand-painted onto the glass surface using traditional methods and fired in a kiln to produce permanence. Work is manufactured to the highest technical standards using proven traditional techniques and premium quality materials. (See making St. Stephen's Chapel window - for a step-by-step description for manufacturing a triple painted and fired, figurative, stained glass window).

Traditional, Figurative and decorative stained glass projects by Lance Feeney:

The selected stained glass projects include design responses for churches of different architectural styles, many requiring new stained glass windows that would complement the work of previous artists. The work varies from neo-Byzantine - St. Anne's RC Church, to neo-gothic - St. Stephen's Cathedral Brisbane, as well as more modern approaches that suit pre-existing stained glass windows by 20 th C artists. Projects selected illustrate a range of styles that Lance Feeney can work across.
